I can’t believe it! Before May 24 I had one goal–passing the orals. Now I’m on the other side where the challenge of research awaits. Tuesday went well, I think. At least we ended with champagne and smiles, and I can’t remember anything I said, which is probably a mercy. Three years of study culminates with “All but dissertation!” What a wonderful phrase!
What’s next, after submitting the signatures, returning about 20 books to the library, and introducing myself to the grandchildren? I’ll be heading to Speyer, Cologne, and Leipzig on June 26 to embark on an archival tour, the first of three trips which will keep me in Germany for most of the next year. Exciting, but poignant for a family person. Stay with me!
