“I’m going to be out of the country for a year.” Sounds impressive and fun to say when cancelling the newspapers or scheduling a precautionary dental checkup. A little harder with friends and family. Even my car has found a new home. But nevertheless here I go! It begins on June 26 with a 2-week Archival Summer Seminar with nine other doctoral students led by the German Historical Institute. We’ve already shared our research proposals on line, and soon we’ll share the intense experience of learning how to mine information from historic archives in Speyer, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Koblenz, and Leipzig. And we’ll learn to read that old German script! I like looking at the examples they sent us and thinking that this will soon be made clear. What do you think this says?
