How could we know back in August that this would be such a good time to get away? Yesterday the cases reached a record high in California and the governor announced a new set of lockdowns which will be based not on county but on the regions hospitals serve. If the ICU capacity is 15 per cent of being full then the region it serves will be under severe restrictions. No region is at that point today, but some are close. The city of Los Angeles is already under stricter lockdowns. But that’s okay because we’re in Orange County, right?

Now there is nothing forbidden about taking a road trip as far as I can tell as long as you don’t visit anybody. So this morning we woke up eager to start our long-awaited trip to Yosemite only to see this news:

A fire in Silverado Canyon. But it’s about 25 miles away. So what could happen? If we had to evacuate, we would pack some clothes, take Ozzie to his favorite doggie camp and go to a hotel. Well, that was exactly our plan anyway. So we fed the fish, turned off the coffee pot, locked up, and drove north.

After we dropped Ozzie off we stopped for gas. The sky was going from blue to yellow-gray as it does when smoke fills the air.

Time to get out of Dodge

For a little over six hours life was peaceful and we talked for a while and listened to a Great Courses podcast on the history of religion in America. It was exactly like any road trip at any time and I could feel the stress fall away. Nothing reminded me of the pandemic until we reached our destination—the Day’s Inn in Fresno. And only because we put on masks to go into the office and check in. Seems almost routine now. But tonight we’re going to a party. In Honolulu.

It’s Zoom Nerd Night with my oldest son’s Mensa group. So tonight they have an interactive beer tasting experience with the Hawaiian Craft Brewers Guild executive director who is a home brewer and home brew judge. The presenter suggested some beer styles to have on hand so we could learn to distinguish flavors and decide on our preferences. Here’s what John and I brought along:

Ready to Zoom tonight

In about an hour John and I will join his brother (stationed at Pearl Harbor) and the other nerds for a Nerd Night taste experience. And all from a Day’s Inn in Fresno.

Tomorrow morning we’ll drive to Yosemite for breakfast. Sometimes you just have to get away.

Stay safe

Today’s Notable Headlines

No news tonight. It’s a vacation.

Why am I doing this?

The coronavirus pandemic will be indelibly written on our memories just as the Great Depression or the Battle of Britain left their mark on past generations. It is my intention to journal the pandemic experience from three perspectives: as a retired medical technologist, a historian (Ph.D., 2014), and an ordinary person living through an extraordinary crisis.

You are on History’s Edge.
